SOCi released its 2026 Local Visibility Index in January 2026. The report analyzed nearly 350,000 business locations across 2,751 brands. The headline number: Google's local 3-pack shows 35.9% of business locations. ChatGPT recommends 1.2%. (Search Engine Land, Jan. 28, 2026)
That is a 30x gap. SOCi estimated AI visibility is 3 to 30 times harder to achieve than ranking in traditional local search, depending on the platform. Gemini recommends 11% of locations. Perplexity recommends 7.4%. ChatGPT recommends 1.2%. (SOCi 2026 Local Visibility Index)
For a trades business owner who spent years climbing Google Maps rankings, the question is simple: what does that gap mean, and what can be done about it?
What the 30x gap actually measures
The 30x figure compares two different systems doing two different jobs. Google's local 3-pack shows the three businesses it considers most relevant for a "near me" search. It appears 35.9% of the time across all local queries SOCi tested. That means more than a third of local searches get a local pack with three slots.
AI recommendations work differently. ChatGPT does not show a pack of three. It names one or two businesses in a sentence. It confirms facts across multiple sources before naming a business. If it cannot confirm a business's name, address, services, and reviews from at least two consistent sources, it skips that business.
The 1.2% rate means ChatGPT named only 1.2% of the 350,000 locations in SOCi's study. The other 98.8% were invisible. Not ranked low. Invisible. The AI did not mention them at all.
Why AI is harder than Google
Google's local ranking uses three main signals: proximity, prominence, and relevance. A plumber two miles away with 200 reviews and "plumber" in the business name can rank in the local pack even with a 4.0 star rating and a thin website.
AI engines use a different filter. SOCi found that AI systems prioritize confidence and risk reduction over breadth. That means AI would rather name fewer businesses it can confirm across multiple sources than name more businesses from a single source. A business with a strong Google ranking but inconsistent data across Bing Places, Yelp, and BBB may not make the cut.
BrightLocal's 2026 local SEO statistics added another layer: recommended businesses on ChatGPT average 4.3 stars. Perplexity's recommended businesses average 4.1. Gemini's average 3.9. (BrightLocal)
Star rating is not a ranking factor in Google's local pack the way it is in AI recommendations. A 4.0-star plumber can rank in Google's local pack. On ChatGPT, that same 4.0-star plumber may fall below the recommendation threshold because the AI prefers businesses above 4.3.
What this means for a 3-truck shop
A plumber in Bergen County ranks #2 in Google Maps for "plumber near me" in their service area. They have 4.2 stars across 180 Google reviews. Their website has not been updated in two years. Their Bing Places listing is unclaimed. Their Yelp page has 12 reviews at 3.8 stars.
Google Maps: they show up. The phone rings.
ChatGPT: a homeowner asks "who should I call for a plumber in Bergen County?" ChatGPT names two competitors with 4.4 and 4.5 stars, consistent listings across Bing, Yelp, and BBB, and websites with current FAQ content. The 4.2-star plumber with the thin Bing Places profile and stale website does not get named.
That is the 30x gap in practice. The plumber wins in Google and loses in AI for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of their plumbing.
What trades businesses can fix
The gap between Google visibility and AI visibility closes with data consistency. Here is the punch list.
Claim every directory listing. Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, BBB, Angi, HomeAdvisor. Same business name, same address, same phone number on every one. ChatGPT pulls local data from Bing's index, so an unclaimed Bing Places listing can keep a business out of ChatGPT recommendations even with a strong Google ranking. Push star ratings above 4.3. Ask recent happy customers for reviews. Respond to every review, positive and negative. Star rating acts as a gatekeeper in AI local search, not just a ranking signal. The difference between 4.2 and 4.4 stars can be the difference between getting named and getting skipped.
Add LocalBusiness schema to the website. JSON-LD structured data tells AI engines exactly what the business is, where it operates, and what services it offers. A website without schema forces the AI to guess. A website with schema hands it the facts.
Publish content that answers questions. AI engines lift clean Q&A blocks. Write 5 to 10 FAQs in the language customers actually use. "How much does a water heater cost in Bergen County?" answered directly and honestly. "Do you do emergency plumbing on weekends?" answered with real hours.
Keep the website current. A site last updated in 2022 signals a business that may have closed or changed. AI engines prefer recent content. Update service pages, hours, and service areas at least quarterly. (FirstCall: content freshness and AI visibility)
Check whether the AI names you. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity who to call for your trade in your towns. Three phrasings, three engines. Write down the names. Run the same check monthly. The 87% of contractors invisible to AI did not know they were invisible because nobody checked.
Why Google ranking alone is not enough
A business can rank in Google's local 3-pack and still be invisible to AI. SOCi found that most brands performing well in traditional local search failed to appear in AI recommendations. The two systems use different sources, different filters, and different confidence thresholds.
Why your Google ranking doesn't mean ChatGPT recommends you breaks down the source difference in detail. The short version: Google's local pack is one system. ChatGPT is another. Ranking in one does not guarantee visibility in the other.
The trades businesses that close the gap do not abandon Google ranking. They add the AI layer on top: consistent listings across every directory, schema on the website, current content, and star ratings above the AI threshold. The fix is not "stop doing SEO." The fix is "do the additional work the AI engines require."
FAQ
Is AI visibility really 30x harder than Google ranking? SOCi estimated AI visibility is 3 to 30 times harder than traditional local search ranking, depending on the platform. ChatGPT recommends 1.2% of locations, Gemini 11%, and Perplexity 7.4%, compared to 35.9% appearing in Google's local 3-pack. The 30x figure is the gap between Google's local pack and ChatGPT's recommendation rate.
Why does ChatGPT only recommend 1.2% of local businesses? ChatGPT prioritizes confidence and data consistency over breadth. It checks multiple sources for the same business facts and only recommends businesses it can confirm across sources. Most local businesses have inconsistent or incomplete data across directories, which makes them hard for ChatGPT to confirm and recommend.
Does ranking well in Google help with AI visibility? It helps with Google's own AI features like AI Overviews, which sit on the Google Search index. It does not automatically transfer to ChatGPT or Perplexity, which pull from different sources. SOCi found most brands performing well in traditional local search fail to appear in AI recommendations.
What star rating does ChatGPT require to recommend a local business? SOCi found recommended businesses average 4.3 stars on ChatGPT, 4.1 on Perplexity, and 3.9 on Gemini. Below those averages, recommendation rates drop sharply. Star rating functions as a gatekeeper in AI local search, not just a ranking factor.
How can a trades business improve its AI visibility? Keep business data consistent across every directory, maintain a star rating above 4.3, add LocalBusiness schema to your website, publish content that answers customer questions in plain language, and claim your Bing Places listing since ChatGPT pulls local data from Bing's index. FirstCall's free audit checks 12 of these signals on a 0-100 scale.
