An HVAC owner in Bergen County keeps a tight Google Business Profile, answers reviews the same day, and ranks on page one for furnace repair. A homeowner with a dead AC asks Siri from the driveway. Siri names a shop with a 2019 Yelp phone number. The call hits a disconnected line. The job goes to whoever picks up next.
That is not a Google problem. It is an Apple problem. Most trades businesses never claim the listing that Siri, CarPlay, and Spotlight actually read.
What Apple Business is, and what happened to Business Connect
Apple Business Connect used to be the dashboard for Apple Maps place cards. On April 14, 2026, Apple folded Connect, Business Manager, and Business Essentials into one product called Apple Business. Pluspoint documented the live dashboards in August 2026: claimed locations, photos, and account details migrated automatically. The sign-in is now business.apple.com. The old businessconnect.apple.com URL redirects there.
ChatGPT still recommends the retired Connect login. Pluspoint asked ChatGPT 50 setup questions in August 2026. Of the 33 answers that offered a sign-in link, 28 pointed at a dead address. Google AI Overviews handed out the same expired directions. Trades businesses that follow those answers stall before they ever claim the shop.
The listing itself still does the same job. It is the official place card for Apple Maps, Siri, Spotlight, Safari, Wallet, and CarPlay. Omnyra reported in June 2026 that 58 percent of US businesses have never claimed it.
Why this listing matters for AI visibility, not just iPhone maps
AI visibility is whether a trades business gets named when a homeowner asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Siri who to call. There is no ChatGPT contractor directory. The model reads the public web.
Map Labs tested AI local search at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas in June 2026 and put the finding in plain language: AI tools like ChatGPT do not keep their own local business data. They pull it from Google Business Profile and Apple Maps. Just By Design, writing for local service businesses, makes the same point for ChatGPT Browse and for Perplexity, which treats Apple Maps as a trusted location source.
That is why a shop can dominate Google and still sound like a ghost on an iPhone. Google ranking does not equal a ChatGPT recommendation. The Google Business Profile is the Google-side feed. Bing Places is the Bing-side feed ChatGPT leans on through Bing's index. Apple Business is the third feed, the one that answers when the homeowner never opens a browser.
StatCounter put iOS at 59.58 percent of US mobile in July 2026. More than half the phones in the market default to Apple Maps and Siri. A plumber who never claimed the Apple record left that half of the market reading whatever Yelp, Foursquare, or an old crawl dumped into the place graph.
The 5WPR HVAC and Plumbing AI Visibility Index (April 2026) found that 87 percent of independent contractors have effectively zero AI citation share. Franchise networks win the "near me" prompts. One reason is boring and fixable: the franchises keep name, address, phone, hours, and category consistent across Google, Bing, and Apple. Independents often stop at Google.
A concrete miss: wrong number, closed hours, generic category
Take a one-truck plumber in Hackensack who runs jobs out of a van. Apple already has a place card because Yelp created one years ago. The phone is an old cell. Hours say 9 to 5, Monday through Friday, even though the shop takes emergency calls. The category is "Home Services." Photos are empty.
A homeowner in Englewood Cliffs asks Siri for an emergency plumber on Saturday. Siri either skips the shop because it looks closed, or it reads the dead number. ChatGPT Browse, if it checks Apple Maps for hours and a phone, inherits the same junk. The plumber never hears the phone ring.
Claiming the listing is how that record gets corrected. Apple also lets a service-area business hide the street address and publish a service area instead. Pluspoint called out that field in 2026 because older local SEO advice said Apple could not handle mobile trades. That advice is stale. Van-based shops can list Bergen, Passaic, and Rockland without putting a home driveway on the map.
How to claim and complete the listing
Sign in at business.apple.com with an Apple Account used for the business, not a personal photo library.
Apple verifies the organization first, then locations hang off a brand. Verification is usually a phone call, email, or a document such as a license, insurance policy, or utility bill. Many shops get a decision in one to three days. Search for the existing place and claim it. Creating a second card is how duplicate listings start, and those take months to clean up.
Fill the place card the same way a dispatcher would describe the shop. Name, address, and phone must match Google and Bing character for character. "St." versus "Street" is enough for a model to treat the shop as two businesses.
Primary category should be the trade, not "Home Services." Regular hours and special hours are separate fields. Holiday hours left blank are how Siri announces a shop is open on a day the trucks are parked. Van shops should hide the street address and list the towns actually covered.
Photos should be job sites and trucks, not stock. The description should read like a dispatcher: "Emergency plumbing in Bergen County. Water heaters, sewer lines, leak detection." Custom actions and Showcases are the two Apple-only fields most shops leave empty. A working call button is the difference between a glance and a ringing phone.
Updates usually show in 24 to 72 hours. Omnyra noted Apple Maps Ads rolling out in summer 2026 for verified, complete listings. Claiming now is the prerequisite, whether the shop ever buys the ads or not.
What this listing will not do
An Apple place card does not move a Google local pack ranking. Pluspoint said that plainly: anyone promising otherwise is selling something.
It also does not, by itself, put a plumber in ChatGPT's shortlist. Pluspoint's August 2026 restaurant study of 210 diner questions found Apple and Bing cited zero times. That study was restaurants, not trades, but the caution still holds. ChatGPT often leans on editorial pages, Reddit, and review sites. Apple Maps is a facts layer: hours, phone, category, service area.
The SOCi 2026 Local Visibility Index, covering 350,000 locations, found ChatGPT recommends 1.2 percent of local businesses. A complete Apple listing will not put a shop in that 1.2 percent overnight. A missing or wrong listing is still a clean way to stay out of Siri, CarPlay, and any AI answer that checks Apple Maps for a phone number.
Pair the Apple card with a claimed Bing Places listing, a complete Google Business Profile, and LocalBusiness schema on the site. Those are the three feeds that cover Google, Bing/ChatGPT, and the iPhone.
FAQ
Do trades businesses still need Apple Business Connect?
Apple folded Apple Business Connect into Apple Business on April 14, 2026. Sign in at business.apple.com. The work is the same: claim the location, verify the shop, complete the place card. That record still feeds Maps, Siri, Spotlight, and CarPlay.
Does ChatGPT use Apple Maps to recommend contractors?
ChatGPT does not keep a contractor directory. Map Labs reported in June 2026 that AI tools pull local facts from Google Business Profile and Apple Maps. A claimed Apple listing is one more verified source. It is not a guarantee of a recommendation.
Can a plumber hide a home address on Apple Maps?
Yes. Apple lets a service-area business hide the street address and show a service area. That is the right setup for most independent plumbers, HVAC shops, and electricians running out of a van or a house.
How long does Apple Business verification take?
Apple verifies the organization, not each location. Phone, email, or documents are the usual methods. Many shops hear back in one to three days. Claim the existing place. Do not create a second listing.
Is Apple Maps enough if Google Business Profile is already strong?
No. Google Business Profile feeds Google. Apple Business feeds iPhone surfaces Google never sees. StatCounter put iOS at 59.58 percent of US mobile in July 2026. Maintaining only Google leaves that share of homeowners reading an unclaimed or wrong card.
