No. ChatGPT does not look at your Google position and copy it. Ahrefs measured 15,000 prompts and found that only about 12% of the URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot also sit in Google's top 10 for the same question. Google's own AI Overviews still pull from Google. The chatbots homeowners open on their phones do not.
That is the whole problem in one number. A plumber can own the local 3-pack in Bergen County and still never get named when a homeowner types "who should I call for a leaking water heater in Hackensack" into ChatGPT.
What Google ranking actually buys you in 2026
Google ranking still matters. Homeowners still open Maps. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 45% of consumers now use AI tools to find local services, up from 6% a year earlier. Google and Facebook still sit ahead of AI. The mix is shifting. It has not flipped.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of Google Search. If a homeowner stays inside google.com, a strong ranking still feeds the summary box. Ahrefs found that 76% of AI Overview citations come from pages already in the top 10. That is Google talking to Google.
The minute the same homeowner switches to ChatGPT or Perplexity, that ranking stops being the scoreboard. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, covering more than 350,000 locations across 2,751 brands, put ChatGPT's recommendation rate at 1.2% of local businesses. Gemini recommended 11%. Perplexity recommended 7.4%. The traditional local 3-pack sat at 35.9%. Search Engine Land called AI visibility 3 to 30 times harder than a local pack ranking, depending on the engine.
FirstCall's plain-English guide to AI visibility covers the category. The short version for a shop owner: Google rank is one input among many, and for ChatGPT it is a weak one.
Why ChatGPT ignores a #1 Maps listing
ChatGPT is trying to answer a question without sending the user a list of ten blue links. To do that, it has to be confident the business is real, in the right town, licensed for the job, and not a reputation risk. A #1 pack ranking proves proximity and some Google signals. It does not prove the rest.
Here is what usually breaks the chain for a trades shop:
The Google Business Profile says "Joe's Plumbing, Paramus, NJ." The website footer still lists a cell number from 2019 and a town the shop left two years ago. Yelp has the old suite number. Bing Places is empty. The model sees three different businesses and picks the franchise whose facts match everywhere.
Reviews sit at 3.8 stars with 22 ratings and no owner replies. SOCi found ChatGPT's recommended businesses averaged 4.3 stars. Gemini sat at 3.9. Perplexity sat at 4.1. A middling Maps listing can still rank on proximity. ChatGPT will skip it.
The site has no FAQ, no LocalBusiness schema, and no page that says "emergency drain cleaning in Passaic County." The model needs sentences it can lift. A homepage built around "quality you can trust" gives it nothing to quote.
How ChatGPT picks local businesses walks through that pipeline in more detail. Rank is not a step in it.
Perplexity is the closest thing to "the chatbot uses Google." In the same Ahrefs study, nearly 1 in 3 of Perplexity's citations also ranked in Google's top 10. That is still a minority. It is also the high-water mark. ChatGPT and Gemini were far lower. Treating "I rank on Google" as "I will show up in AI answers" is how shops stay invisible.
The shop that ranks and the shop that gets named are often different shops
Scatterbranch Marketing's 2026 research, cited across local AEO roundups, put the overlap between strong Google local results and AI recommendations at about 45%. That means more than half of the businesses winning Maps are not the ones the chatbot names.
5WPR's HVAC and Plumbing AI Visibility Index found 87% of independent HVAC and plumbing contractors had effectively zero citation share in their own metro. Franchises won 25% to 30% of "service near me" prompts despite making up under 5% of contractors. The franchise did not magically rank better on every Google query. It had cleaner public facts, more third-party mentions, and a website the model could parse.
ServiceTitan's 2026 State of AI in the Trades surveyed 1,032 contractors across seven trades. 66% expect AI to change the business within one to three years. Only 12% have embedded AI in operations. Most of that conversation is about dispatch and estimates. The homeowner is already asking ChatGPT who to call. Training the office on a chatbot does not put the shop on that shortlist.
Why a Google ranking does not mean ChatGPT recommends you is the companion piece if the 3-pack looks healthy and the phone is still quieter than it should be.
Punch list: what to fix this week if ranking is not transferring
Do these in order. None of them require a franchise or an agency retainer.
- Open ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity in a private window. Ask "best plumber in [your city]," "emergency HVAC repair near [town]," and "electrician who can replace a panel in [county]." Write down who gets named. That is the baseline.
- Pull the Google Business Profile, the website footer, Yelp, and Bing Places onto one screen. Name, address, phone, hours, and service area must match character for character. Fix the mismatches before touching anything else.
- Add LocalBusiness schema, and the trade subtype if the site can support it (Plumber, HVACBusiness, Electrician). Schema does not "game" ChatGPT. It gives crawlers a labeled card instead of a blob of marketing copy.
- Put 5 to 8 real FAQs on the main service pages, written the way a dispatcher answers the phone. "Do you service Waldwick on weekends?" beats "Our team is dedicated to customer satisfaction."
- Get the review average above 4.3 and reply to every review, including the bad ones. SOCi's Batteries Plus example in the Local Visibility Index had a 98.3% reply rate and an average response time of 0.6 days. That is the bar the models are already using as a confidence check.
- Recheck the three prompts from step 1 in 30 days. If the names on the list have not changed, the public facts still do not match.
FirstCall's audit is built around that punch list. It does not promise a #1 ChatGPT slot. It tells a shop which of those signals are missing.
FAQ
Do AI chatbots use Google rankings?
Mostly no. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode do, because they sit on Google Search. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot do not copy your Google position. Ahrefs put the overlap at about 12% of cited URLs also ranking in the top 10 for the same prompt.
If a shop ranks in the Google local 3-pack, will ChatGPT recommend it?
Not automatically. SOCi found ChatGPT names 1.2% of local locations. The local 3-pack shows 35.9%. Ranking on Maps is useful. It is not the same as being the answer in a chatbot.
Which AI assistant is closest to Google rankings?
Perplexity. Roughly one in three of its citations also ranked in Google's top 10 in Ahrefs' study. ChatGPT and Gemini were much lower. Google AI Overviews are Google Search with a summary, so they track rankings more closely.
What should a trades business do if Google ranking is not enough?
Match NAP across listings, add LocalBusiness schema, write answer-shaped FAQs, push reviews above about 4.3 stars with replies, and make the website name the towns and jobs the shop actually does. Then retest the prompts.
How can a contractor check if ChatGPT names the business?
Ask the same questions a homeowner would ask, from a private window, on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Log the names. Repeat monthly. Run the free AI visibility audit if the site needs a scored punch list instead of guesswork.
A #1 Maps pin still helps the people who open Google. It does not decide what ChatGPT says. Run your free AI visibility audit and see which of those signals the shop is missing.
