Google Search Console now has a dedicated view for generative AI features. Google shipped it on June 3, 2026. As of August 31, 2026, Google says those insights are rolled out to websites worldwide. The report counts how often a page from the site appeared inside AI Overviews or AI Mode. It does not count clicks. It does not list the search queries. Country is the finest location cut, so a Passaic County HVAC shop sees "United States," not Clifton.
That is the product. A visibility log, not a lead tracker.
The Clifton shop that ranked and still got quieter
A two-truck HVAC company in Clifton, New Jersey, spent three years on Google. The Map Pack listing is clean. Reviews sit at 4.8. The furnace repair page ranks on page one for several Passaic County queries. Spring 2026 looked fine in the regular Search Console chart. Impressions climbed. The phone did not.
Homeowners now ask Google full questions. Repair or replace a 12-year-old water heater. Why the furnace short-cycles at 20 degrees. Google often answers those on the results page. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a traditional result on 8 percent of visits. Without one, 15 percent. Links inside the summaries were clicked on about 1 percent of visits. Ahrefs, across 300,000 keywords, found an AI Overview lined up with a 34.5 percent lower click-through rate for the top organic result, and 58 percent in a later December 2025 pass.
Until June, there was no first-party way to tell whether Google's AI answers were citing the furnace page or skipping it. Now there is a chart. Partially.
What the report actually counts
Open Search Console. Performance. Generative AI. Two reports sit there. One covers Search: AI Overviews on a normal results page, plus AI Mode, Google's conversational search. The other covers generative features in Discover. Search Labs experiments are out.
Google lists five cuts: impressions, pages, countries, devices (Search report only), and dates.
John Mueller confirmed the counting rules that matter for a small site. An unlinked brand mention does not count. A favicon does not count unless it links to a page. Links behind a "show more" panel count only after someone opens them. Multiple links from the same site inside one AI answer roll up as a single impression.
The number is smaller than "times Google talked about the shop." It is closer to "times a clickable page from the site was actually shown." Those impressions already live inside the overall Performance totals. Adding the two charts together double-counts visibility.
What the report will not tell a service-area business
No clicks, click-through rate, queries, or average position. Country is the finest geography. A Phoenix roofer sees United States. A Calgary furnace company sees Canada. There is no town, county, or service-area filter.
A Clifton HVAC shop cannot tell whether an impression came from a homeowner ten minutes away or a student writing a paper in Ohio. Query data would have helped. Google did not ship it.
The report also does not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini as a standalone app. Search Console is Google talking about Google. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found ChatGPT recommended 1.2 percent of local locations. That number will not appear in this chart. A Saturday ChatGPT audit still has to happen by hand.
If the Generative AI tab is missing, that is not proof of zero AI visibility. Google started with a subset of properties. A site can sit out because it has too few AI impressions, or because someone flipped the opt-out. The first date on the shop's own chart is the baseline.
The August 13 drop that was not a ranking crash
Around August 12 and 13, 2026, many properties saw generative AI impressions fall off a cliff. Glenn Gabe flagged a matching click drop in the regular performance report.
John Mueller said on Bluesky that it was a logging issue, not a live visibility change. Google's data anomalies page recorded August 13 for Generative AI in Search. Search Engine Roundtable reported the series bouncing back around August 20, with Google posting a "fixed" note on August 31.
A trades owner who opened Search Console in late August and panicked about losing AI citations was reading a broken log. Pair the chart with calls, Google Business Profile, and GA4 before rewriting a service page.
How a trades shop should read the Pages view
The useful cut is Pages, not the headline impression total. After a month, the Clifton HVAC company shows 140 impressions: 80 on a 2023 furnace short-cycle post, 40 on the water-heater FAQ, 20 on the homepage, zero on the emergency heating page that is supposed to make the phone ring at 9 p.m.
Google's AI answers are pulling troubleshooting posts, not the service pages that name towns, hours, and the license number. A homeowner who already decided to call still uses Maps. A homeowner who is still deciding gets an AI answer. If the citable page has no service area, the answer can stay generic. Four-point-eight stars do not force a name into that answer.
The fix is not a new SEO retainer. Update the furnace page so it states the towns, the after-hours number, and the license in plain sentences. Add LocalBusiness schema with the HVACBusiness subtype. Keep the Google Business Profile in the same name, address, and phone as the site. Then wait. The report is a trendline. One week of data is noise.
Do not opt out of generative AI features to "protect" traffic. Opting out removes the pages from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Rankings elsewhere do not improve as a consolation prize. For a shop that lives on inbound calls, that is giving up the surface that is growing while keeping the surface that is losing clicks.
A 20-minute check this week
Log into Search Console on a laptop. Confirm the Generative AI view exists. If it does not, note the date and check again in two weeks. Do not rebuild the website in the meantime.
Export the Pages table for the longest date range the property has. Screenshot the chart. Write down the earliest date shown. That is the baseline. Next to the top five URLs, mark whether each one can send a job: a service page with town names, or a blog post with no phone number.
Search the shop from two zips inside the service area, using homeowner language, not the legal business name. If Google names a franchise and Search Console shows the FAQ, the citation is real and the lead is not. Keep GBP calls in the same notebook. Search Console will not connect an AI impression to a ringing phone.
Run your free AI visibility audit if the Pages list is empty or the named answers are all national brands. The audit is a 12-point check, not another dashboard.
FAQ
What does the Search Console Generative AI report show for a contractor?
How often URLs from the site appeared inside Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device, and date. Google launched the reports on June 3, 2026 and, as of August 31, 2026, says they are available worldwide. Clicks, queries, and city are not included.
Does a missing Generative AI report mean the shop is invisible in AI answers?
No. Google started with a subset of properties and still hides the view when a site has too few AI impressions. An account owner can also opt the property out.
Does the report include ChatGPT or Perplexity?
No. Search Console only covers Google surfaces. ChatGPT and Perplexity still need a manual prompt check. The 20-minute ChatGPT audit covers those queries.
Should a trades business add Search Console AI impressions to regular Search totals?
No. Those impressions already sit in the overall Performance report. Adding the two charts together double-counts visibility.
Did AI impressions really crash in mid-August 2026?
For many properties, no. Google logged a data error starting August 13, 2026. John Mueller said it was a logging issue, not a live visibility change. Treat a cliff on those dates as a reporting glitch unless calls and GBP also fell.
