Google started automatically upgrading certain Search campaigns to AI Max for Search on September 1, 2026. If your plumbing, HVAC, or electrical business runs Google Ads with the campaign-level broad match setting or Automatically Created Assets turned on, the upgrade is happening to your account this month. You do not have to click anything. Google is doing it for you.

That sounds convenient until you check what AI Max changes. The upgrade turns on search term matching by default, which means Google can show your ads on queries you did not explicitly target. For a trades business spending $20 to $50 per click on "emergency plumber near me," that expansion can burn through a monthly budget in a week if the matching gets loose.

Here is what the September upgrade changes, which campaigns it affects, and what to do about it.

Which campaigns are being upgraded

Google announced the auto-upgrade on August 5, 2026. Starting September 1, campaigns using two specific settings are being converted to AI Max for Search:

  1. Campaign-level broad match. This is the setting that converts every keyword in a campaign to broad match, not just individual ad groups. If you flipped the campaign-level broad match toggle at any point, your entire campaign is in scope.
  1. Automatically Created Assets (ACA). This Google Ads feature generates headlines and descriptions from your website content. If ACA is enabled on any campaign, that campaign is being upgraded.

Both settings are being migrated between September 1 and September 30, 2026. Google expects all eligible upgrades to finish by the end of the month. (Google Ads Blog, Aug. 5, 2026)

Not every trades business is affected. If your campaigns use exact-match or phrase-match keywords and you never turned on ACA, the upgrade does not apply. The migration only touches campaigns with those two specific settings active.

What about Dynamic Search Ads?

Google originally planned to auto-upgrade Dynamic Search Ads (DSA) in September too. In June 2026, Google pushed that date back to February 2027. DSA campaigns are not part of the September migration. (Google Ads Developer Blog, June 2026)

If you run DSA campaigns, you can still upgrade voluntarily starting in September 2026. Google will show in-account notices encouraging the switch. The automatic DSA migration runs February 1 through 28, 2027. You have until then to decide.

The earlier LSA-to-Performance Max migration that trades businesses dealt with in August 2026 was a separate change. That moved Google's Local Services Ads into PMax campaigns. The September AI Max upgrade is about Search campaigns, not LSA.

What AI Max for Search actually changes

When the upgrade hits your campaign, AI Max for Search enables three features:

  • Search term matching on by default. Google expands your ads to searches it considers relevant to your keywords, even if you did not bid on those exact terms. A plumber bidding on "water heater repair" might start showing up for "tankless installation" or "boiler service" if Google decides those are related.
  • Text customization. AI Max can rewrite your ad headlines and descriptions based on what it thinks the searcher wants to see. Your carefully written "Licensed Plumber in Bergen County" headline might become "Expert Plumbing Repair Near You" on certain queries.
  • Final URL expansion. Google can send clicks to pages on your site beyond the landing page you specified. A click meant for your homepage might land on a service page instead.

Google said the upgrade "mirrors your legacy settings" initially. That means the AI features start in a conservative mode based on your existing configuration. Conservative is relative. "Search term matching on by default" means your ads are eligible for more queries than before, and the only way to know which ones is to check your search term reports after the upgrade goes live.

Why this matters for trades budgets

Trades businesses tend to run tight Google Ads budgets. A 3-truck plumbing company spending $2,000 a month on Google Ads needs every click to count. AI Max's expanded matching can pull clicks from queries that are adjacent but not quite right.

A plumber in Passaic County saw this happen during the AI Max beta in spring 2026. The campaign started spending on "plumbing supply store" and "plumbing parts wholesale" queries because broad match decided those were related to "plumbing services." Those clicks cost $4 to $7 each and produced zero calls. The campaign burned through 30% of its monthly budget in the first week on irrelevant traffic.

That kind of spend drift is the main risk for trades businesses in the September upgrade. It is not catastrophic. It is expensive if nobody watches the account for two weeks.

What to do before September 30

Check whether your campaigns are in scope. Log into Google Ads. Go to your Search campaigns. Look at the settings for each campaign. If you see "Campaign-level broad match" toggled on, or "Automatically Created Assets" enabled, that campaign is being upgraded.

You have two choices:

Option 1: Let the upgrade happen. AI Max will turn on search term matching, text customization, and final URL expansion in a conservative mode based on your existing settings. Monitor your search term reports daily for the first two weeks. Add negative keywords for any irrelevant queries. If spend drifts beyond 20% of your normal daily budget, pause the campaign and adjust.

Option 2: Turn off the settings before the upgrade. Disable Automatically Created Assets and switch off campaign-level broad match. The auto-upgrade will not apply to your campaign. Your historical performance data stays intact. You keep full control over your keywords and ad copy.

For most trades businesses spending under $5,000 a month, Option 2 is the safer play. Tight keyword control matters more than Google's AI reach expansion when the budget is small. A $2,000/month plumber does not need AI Max deciding which queries count as "plumbing." The plumber already knows.

For trades businesses spending $10,000+ a month with dedicated Google Ads management, Option 1 can work. The expanded reach may surface valuable queries that exact match misses. But check the search term report every day for the first two weeks and set a budget alert at 120% of your daily average.

How this connects to AI visibility

The AI Max upgrade is a Google Ads change, not an AI visibility change. But the two are connected. Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews now appear on 68% of local business searches, and Google is building agentic booking into home services categories. The same AI that powers AI Max for Search is powering the AI Overviews that cite or skip your business.

A trades business that controls its Google Ads tightly and keeps its organic AI visibility high gets paid traffic from the exact-match queries it wants, plus organic visibility in AI answers it did not pay for. ChatGPT ads for home services opened in May 2026 too, giving trades businesses a second paid channel. The businesses that keep their options open rather than letting Google auto-expand everything are the ones that control costs when the AI matching gets creative.

FAQ

Is Google upgrading my Search campaigns to AI Max in September 2026? Only campaigns using the campaign-level broad match setting or Automatically Created Assets are being auto-upgraded between September 1 and 30, 2026. If your campaigns use exact or phrase match without ACA, the upgrade does not apply.

Are Dynamic Search Ads being upgraded in September 2026? No. Google delayed the DSA auto-upgrade to February 2027. DSA campaigns are not part of the September 2026 migration. You can still upgrade DSA voluntarily starting in September, but the automatic migration starts February 1, 2027.

Can I stop the AI Max auto-upgrade from happening? Yes. Turn off Automatically Created Assets and the campaign-level broad match setting before September 1, 2026 to prevent the auto-upgrade. Your historical performance data stays intact when you do this manually.

What does AI Max for Search do differently than my current setup? AI Max for Search turns on search term matching by default, which expands your ads to more queries. It can also add text customization and final URL expansion. The upgrade mirrors your existing settings initially, but the AI features may broaden your reach beyond what you originally targeted.

Should trades businesses turn off AI Max or let it run? It depends on your budget and how tightly you control your keywords. If you rely on exact-match keywords for specific trades services and want tight control, turn off ACA and broad match before September 1. If you are comfortable with Google expanding your reach to related searches, let the upgrade happen and monitor results closely for the first two weeks.
